San Carlos de Bariloche (often just called Bariloche) is a beautiful, Alpine-inspired city stretched out along the shores of Lake Nahuel Huapi in Argentina’s Patagonia region. No matter the season, nature lovers can fill their days with any number of outdoor activities, from hiking Cerro Tronadar to trout fly fishing, kayaking along Mascardi Lake, or catching the first chairlift for a day of skiing. Even those who prefer the indoors will appreciate the unbeatable views, a perfect backdrop for shopping along Bartolomé Mitre, exploring the city’s museums and churches in centro cívico, and sampling the local chocolate (and beer!) for which the area is famous. Make sure to save some energy for when the sun goes down, because that’s when the city really comes to life, with many bars and nightclubs going strong until sunrise.
