Tasmania’s capital is a lovely, if not particularly exciting, place to begin or end your Tasmanian travels. Situated by the mouth of the Derwent River at the foot of Mt. Wellington, Hobart is filled with vacationing Australian families, leading some backpackers to denounce it as dull. However, the city has affordable accommodations, is walkable, and boasts a fantastic farmer’s market. It’s easy to see Hobart as a mere stepping stone to the Tasmanian wilderness, but an extra day here is worthwhile for its charming architecture, laid-back atmosphere, and tours of its famous factories that produce two of life’s greatest pleasures: chocolate and beer.
