Lello Bookstore

Ivo Rainha

More than a bookstore, the Lello Bookstore, or Livraria Lello, is an architectural masterpiece in the heart of Porto.

The façade combines Gothic elements with Art Nouveau, and the interior’s tiled ceiling and majestic central staircase introduce a little Art Deco. What really draws in the crowds, though, is the fact that JK Rowling was a frequent visitor from 1991-1993 while she was teaching English in Porto. The building is said to have inspired the author while she worked on the manuscript that would become Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.

Best things to see at Lello Bookstore

Besides being able to marvel at the aesthetic and design once you step inside, the Lello Bookstore is still a functioning bookstore. Comb through all different genres and types of literature on shelves that go straight up to the ceiling. Your admission voucher also doubles as a coupon to purchase something in the store, so take advantage of your built in deal! After renovations in 2017, the bookstore also includes a basement space dedicated to hosting events in a series called Living Voices. These events highlight cultural and artistic events in literature, theatre, and cinema. Head to their events schedule before going to see if there is anything that interests you.
